Back in March of 2011, all I heard was “You have to join WICT!” I would never know how powerful and true that statement would be until a few years later.

When I first got involved with Comcast, I was working as an account manager for an IT staffing firm, Apex Systems. My main role there was to provide Comcast short-term resources to complete their project needs. During my time in that role, I got to meet lots of different people from the company and was able to build some great relationships.

In January of 2011, I met with one of my favorite managers at Comcast. She had been with the company for many years and I had a lot of respect for her. I saw something on her desk that said “Women in Cable Telecommunications.” My curiosity was piqued, so I asked what that organization was all about. She went on to explain a little bit about WICT, what they do and how it has benefited her. The first thing she mentioned was the mentoring program where one of the top women in the entire company was her mentor. (Lucky!) A mental note was made: Get into that program ASAP!

I started doing my research. I kept thinking to myself what a great thing it is to be surrounded by other women in your industry and learn from each other. I went on the website and found a WICT Philly “Meet and Connect” that was being held in Jersey. I went to the person who first told me about WICT and said nicely, “We’re going and you are taking me as your guest.” (Hey, she got a free prize out of it for bringing me, so it worked out for us both!)

When I arrived at the event, it was unlike anything I’d ever attended before. Here I was at 23 years old mingling with the top ladies in the industry. I thought to myself: Hey, this is AWESOME! I literally whipped out my credit card and joined WICT that night and haven’t looked back since.

I’ve moved full steam ahead in volunteer efforts, assisting different program committees such as Tech It Out and the Speaker Series, and now I am serving as the Programming Director on the 2013 WICT Philly Board. Not only has WICT given me such incredible career advice and friendships, but it has also helped me land my job in Comcast. Without the networking and advice I’ve gained from the organization and the people who make it what it is, I can honestly say that I would not be where I am today.

As much valuable information and connection opportunities as WICT can offer, I truly believe that you get out of it what you put into it. I make it a point to network with people at least two times a week. I also make an effort to stay in touch with people, even if we can’t get together in person. I’ve created what I like to call my “Career Cabinet,” which consists of about 10 people that I know I can go to with problems or questions, use as a sounding board or get advice. These women and men have been more valuable to me than they will ever know − you know who you are.

I can’t thank WICT enough for opening up doors, and for opening up my mind to all new possibilities.

2012 WICT Chapter of the Year

The WICT Chapter awards measure important aspects of the Model Chapter Business Plan (MCBP), and Chapters earn points for performance that meets or exceeds guidelines laid out in the MCBP. The Chapter of the Year award is presented to the top performing Chapter as measured by MCBP scores in areas such as programming, governance and membership. It was far from easy, but together we did it. Congratulations to WICT Greater Philadelphia for being the 2012 Chapter of the year!

Similar to the WICT Chapter award, the WICT “Inspire” Award is determined based upon measuring our achievements against elements of the Model Chapter Business Plan. As if winning the 2012 Chapter of the Year award was not enough, we earned 90+ points out of a possible 100 to take home the WICT “Inspire” Award!
