The world’s first international communications satellite, Telstar I, launched into orbit this month 58 years ago.

A collaboration between the US, Britain, and France, Telstar I introduced the world to trans-Atlantic video feeds and ushered in a new era of communication.  It successfully relayed through space the first television pictures, telephone calls, and  telegraph  images, and provided the first live transatlantic television feed. Launched by NASA aboard a Delta Rocket from Cape Canaveral on July 10, 1962, Telstar 1 was the first privately sponsored space launch.

Meet Alicia: Sr. Manager, Regulatory Compliance at Comcast!
What do you love most about your job?

Within my current role, I am responsible for leading a team of individuals who resolve consumer complaints received from state Regulatory and Consumer agencies. I enjoy developing programs and processes to ensure the department is adhering to regulatory compliance requirements as well as developing cross-functional relationships with our internal and external regulatory business partners to support and resolve compliance issues, regulatory filings and regulatory compliance obligations for Comcast services. There is always something new to learn and I feel that me and my team members are playing an important part in maintaining the positive reputation that is already associated with the company.

How have other women helped shape your career?

Throughout my career, I have met and worked with so many empowering women who made it a priority to inspire and motivate me to grow within my career. Their guidance and willingness to share their own personal career growth experiences, encouraged me to identify my own career path and pursue it with a passion! Not to mention, I have one of the most successful role models to look up to and make proud – my mother! The best type of inspiration comes from the women you’re surrounded with. Women are strong and motivating and there is so much we could do together if we all learn from one another.

Outside of work, what’s something you’re passionate about?

Family time is extremely important to me. In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, traveling and spending as much time as possible with my husband, family and friends. Some of my best times have been experienced with my family, so I am devoted to planning activities as well as outings that my family and I can experience together.

What do you value most about your WICT membership?

WICT is a positive outlet for women to come together and learn more about the industry. I have attended informative trainings and seminars that have enhanced my skillset and developed me into an effective leader. In addition, the scholarship and networking opportunities that are provided from the organization are extremely beneficial for women within this industry.
