Meet Jen Ackerman, Associate Director of UX Research at Comcast

What do you do for work and what do you love about it and what is most challenging?
Jen: I’m a people researcher and manager of other researchers. It’s so interesting to observe how customers use our products, to learn about their lives, needs, and how they use TV to entertain themselves and their families. It can be challenging to work on projects with large teams and so many stakeholders, but it’s also a great opportunity to learn about different facets of our organization and products, which allows us to understand the business challenges, as well as the user experience.

How have other women inspired you or helped shape your career?
Jen: I’ve been fortunate to have strong woman leaders around me for most of my career, including my current manager at Comcast, Liz Kell, who is an ambitious and strong leader. But I’d be remiss not to mention my mom who was so inspiring to me as a mother of four kids, working full-time, performing the ultimate juggling act of a large family and work. I didn’t realize it growing up, but now have so much respect for her multi-tasking skills and the ability to squeeze so much into every day.

What is your favorite TV show?
Jen: Right now I’m following “Girls” and “The Good Wife,” and just finished catching up on “Portlandia.” I also watch a lot of “Thomas the Train,” because I have a two-year-old at home.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?
Jen: In my early career, I dabbled in a few different jobs-advertising copywriter, graphic designer, product manager, project manager. It surprises me when someone knows what they want to be when they grow up-I admire that!

What do you like most about WICT?
Jen: Access to so many events that encourage you to think bigger, and outside of your immediate sphere of influence.

Why do you think WICT is important?
Jen: The mentorship and networking opportunities with other women who understand the unique environment of cable and entertainment.
